Dynamix Tip: Refrain Excel add-in to refresh records on open

Hello there D.M.-azing D365 Community!

Here’s a quick Dynamix Tip to save time when working with Excel add-in.

We got a query from our one of our clients on how they can prevent Excel add-in from fetching records from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations to Excel file because they are primarily using Excel add-in to upload records (instead of Data framework management import/export functions) to D365 instead of editing records through it.

And here’s how we did it and hopefully could also provide help when the same requirement occurs during your implementation.

Pre-requisite: There should be a pre-downloaded Open in Excel template from D365 FO Form where records are to be uploaded.

A. To download Open in Excel template:

a.1. Navigate a D365 Form where you’ll going to upload records > On action pane, click Open in Microsoft Office > Under Open in Excel group, select applicable template (uploader) > Download.

a.2. Once downloaded, open the Excel Add-in. Under Excel add-in pane, click Setting or gear icon.

a.3. On Options > Data Connector, untick checkbox for Refresh on Open and click Clear binding data. Save the Excel add-in.

Now that you have the configured Excel add-in, this has to be uploaded on D365 FO.

B. Below are the necessary actions to upload the configured file on D365 FO.

b.1. Upload the configured Excel add-in template going to D365 FO. Go to Common > Common > Office integration > Document templates. Click New then a query form will open. Click Browse to upload the configured Excel Add-in. Click OK.

b.2. Validate if checkbox for List in Open in Office menu is ticked. This will ensure that the uploaded Excel add-in will be available on Open in Excel form.

That’s it for now. I hope that you find this article as a helpful tool for you to better appreciate and understand, everything and anything, about Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations.

It will truly be a privilege if you will allow me to know your thoughts and suggestions for me to further improve the coming featured articles on our blog. ‘Til next time!
