Promised Delivery Date updates the Shipment Date - can this be stopped?

Hi experts,

When I add a shipping agent service to a Sales Order, it defaults the Shipping Time (which is expected).
Then I created a warehouse shipment to arrange shipment and updated the Shipment Date - this shipment date flows back to update the Sales Order when I post the warehouse shipment.
Next, the Planned Delivery Date is updated (Shipment Date + Shipping Time) - as expected. This is equivalent to the ETA for the shipment.

My client now wants to update the ETA based on updated shipping time information.
However, when I update the Planned Delivery Date (or Promised Delivery Date), it automatically back calculates and adjusts the Shipment Date (which is not supposed to happen since the shipment has departed).

If I want to use the Promised Delivery Date to enter an updated "ETA" and not have this automatically trigger the revision of Shipment Date, can I just disable the field trigger? Will this have any adverse impact?
In this way, the Promised Delivery Date will be manually updated in the Sales Order with new information about ETA date.

Otherwise, the option is to create a custom date field for the ETA.

Your suggestions and thoughts on the above will be appreciated.

Thanks
Peter
