How to deal with multiple GTIN for a same product

Hello,

We purchase ram material like sugar or glass from multiple suppliers. It means we have the same product coming with multiple GTIN numbers.

How can we deal with this into D365 F&O?

Is this only way to duplicate the product based on the number of suppliers for the same product?

It means we have to manage BOM with multiple same product..

Does anyone have an alternative?

regards

Christophe

More of a follow up questions here.
Is it necessary to use each supplier's GTIN code as your Glass Jar barcode in your D365FO?
Since the Glass Jar is just a BOM component in your company to manufacture a Glass of Gurkins, wouldn't it be sufficient to create a Code128 barcode for the Glass Jar for example?
You are selling a Jar of Gurkins and not the glass jar itself, so you will override the GTIN code of the glass jar itself anyways to your own GTIN code, no?
Then specifying the suppliers' GTIN code (or item number) in the external item description would be sufficient.

I have seen 2 approaches for this :

    - If GTIN is only for information purposes, customize a new table / form to store this information.

    - If you need to use standard processes, Create a virtual unit of measure with a 1-1 relation. You can duplicate a GTIN for each virtual unit of measure.

Did you find a solution for this? We have the same problem, except that on top, our suppliers each have multiple GTINs for the exact same product (aimed for different markets), and they are regularly changing them (due to changes in packaging). And because we produce medicine we have to register them.

RE: How to deal with multiple GTIN for a same product

Thanks for your reply and sorry if I am not clear enough.

As example, we produce jars of gurkins. The BOM will have raw materials: gurkins, glass jars. We have to specify which article we use in the BOM.

The glass jar are purchased by 2 different suppliers, it is exactly the same jar. Each article has its own GTIN number.

In stock we have 10'000 jars from supplier 1 with GTIN-number1 and 5'000 jars from supplier 2 with GTIN-number2.

When we start the batch, we have to product 15'000 gurkins jars.

The BOM will contain GTIN-number1 for the jar article. It is not enough and we have 5'000 jars from the 2nd supplier with GTIN-number2.

We have to manually replace the article within the BOM each time.

We would like to avoid this manual modification in the batch order if possible.

    Regards

    Christophe

    Hi.

There is something which I do not understand from your post.

You are saying that you need "multiple suppliers for the same product (=different GTIN)".

The GTIN number is unique for a product/uom combination in D365.

I am not sure why the external reference cannot satisfy your needs. The external reference allows for storing vendor specific item numbers on a product in D365, which seems to be exactly what you are asking for. This will mean that you will only have one product number in D365 that is used on BOMs etc., but there can be multiple supplier item numbers registered for the same D365 product number.

Did you have a look at the Docs site which I referenced previously? It outlines the different options in D365 for product identifiers and perhaps there are other identifiers more suitable to your needs. It might be that you need to also batch control the product to identify which supplier it originates from.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your reply. Using the external reference is not the point for us as it would be the suppliers' information.

What we need it to be able having multiple suppliers for the same article (= different GTIN) that we use in BOM.

If we have to create one article for each supplier for the same goods, it means we have to deal with multiple BOM for the same product.

How can we sort this out? I am sure that most companies have multiple suppliers for the same article and that these articles are used for unique BOM.

RE: D365 F&O - how to deal with multiple GTIN for a same product

There can only be one GTIN code per product and unit of measure combination, which supposedly makes sense as it should be a global identifier.

GTIN codes on products are setup here for example:

From your initial description, it seems that you might instead be able to utilize the external item description functionality of D365, this allows you to setup vendor specific item numbers for each released product.

It can be found here on the released products:

Here you can see that you can setup external item numbers for the specific vendors.

You can also have a look at this docs site, to see the different possibilities of product identifiers in D365FO: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/supply-chain/pim/product-identifiers

GTIN and the external references I have mentioned above, are also desribed on the site.
