I am trying to import some data to update existing contacts but keep getting the error "A record was not created or updated because a duplicate of the current record already exists."

If i import with selecting allow duplicates it create new records any ideas on how i can get the record to update.

    Hello,

You can edit the records online as well using "Open in Excel online" feature after adding the column in view that you want to modify :

    Hi,

    Please check below link:

You can simply export records from contacts view. After making changes you need import same file. This way it will update the contact record.

    Reason:
when we export the records from crm then in excel we have 3 hidden columns as shown below:

These field helps crm to update the records.

    Hi,

It will throw a duplicate detection error if the updated record matches a published duplicate detection rule.

So disable the duplicate detection rules for the table being imported, rerun your export/import, and then publish the duplicate detection rules again once the import is complete.

The following link will give you more details.

By the way, did you import the custom file?

I think that export, make changes, reimport can avoid error too.
