BYOD/Data Lake/Synapse Link which one is better

Hi All,

We're currently facing challenges with BYOD, encountering issues like getting stuck and requiring multiple workarounds, including entity deletion and republishing. We're exploring more stable alternatives, such as Data Lake or Synapse Link. I'm interested in your thoughts on which one might be better suited for our needs and why, considering any deprecated options.

Thanks,
Hisham

Synapse Link isn't an alternative to Data Lake. It's a way how to get data from F&O to Data Lake (among other options).

    Hi,

Based on your specific challenges with BYOD and the need for a more stable alternative, here's an overview of Data Lake and Synapse Link:
    Data Lake:

    • Data Lake integration in Dynamics 365 F&O allows you to store and manage large volumes of data from different sources. It provides a centralized repository for structured and unstructured data, enabling advanced analytics and reporting capabilities.
    • With Data Lake, you can leverage Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, which offers features like limitless scalability, security, and powerful analytics.

    Synapse Link:

    • Synapse Link is designed to provide seamless and real-time analytics by connecting Dynamics 365 F&O data with Azure Synapse Analytics. It enables near real-time insights and decision-making with integrated data analytics and AI capabilities.
    • Synapse Link simplifies data warehousing and processing, offering enhanced performance and cost efficiency.

Both options offer robust capabilities for handling and analyzing data from F&O.

    Best regards,
    Kevin

BYOD/Data Lake/Synapse Link which one is better
    Hello,

To complete the question of the original poster, I'd like to say that the export to ADL is supposed to be deprecated in Nov 2024.

Microsoft new solution seems to be   Synapse Link for Dataverse service built into Power Apps.
What I fail to understand is how is it really different ? The new solution seems to be based on Azure Data Lake exports anyway (in the context of D365F&SCM).

I guess that original poster wanted to know the difference between the 3 solutions provided by Microsoft :

We are currently using the BYOD solution, but it has some flaws (development costs, nightly export lasts for more than 3 hours).

We were supposed to migrate to the Export to Data Lake, so I'm having the same question and I wonder if the last version isn't just a renaming of the Data Lake+ forced used of Synapse.

    Thanks,

Great question. I actually just finished a Synapse Link implementation with Goal to replace our BYOD. First thing to note. BYOD you extract Entities from D365FO. Synapse Link you are extracting tables (yes you can select entities as dataverse virtual tables, but they are slow and basically worthless if your goal is to get data from D365FO into your internal systems.) So with Synapse link you have to build the entities yourself from the raw table. Which is considerable investment in both time, infrastructure, to process all the raw data. To do that you are also going to need a Tier 1 Env to use as a reference. So yes you can replace BYOD with Synapse Link, is it easy to replace it absolutely not. Microsoft should have spent the effort to allow for the publishing of Entities to parquet file format.
