I would like to change the install language of CRM on premise as some setting are not available with the secondary language.

Is this possible?

Would installing the English version over another language work?

No, you will need to create a new organization with English base language and move the customizations/data to it.

I can see I missed out some important points.

The install language of CRM is German.

The English language pack is installed and functioning.

However, when the display language is set to English some setting are not available.

e.g. the “Customize the System.” button is not there if the display language is set to English, when the install / base language is German.

What I would like to do is change the install / base language of  the already existing German CRM to English.

    Is this possible?

    Hi,

With Microsoft Dynamics 365 Server, only the base language of the first organization is tied to the language of the server installation. All other organizations can have different base languages, but you must first install Language Packs for the additional languages. For instructions about how to install Language Packs, see Install or upgrade Language Packs for Microsoft Dynamics 365.

Please check docs.microsoft.com/.../hh699780(v=crm.8) and https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/dynamicscrm-2016/deployment-administrators-guide/hh699674(v=crm.8) for more information.
